This piece shows the developing 'narrative style' of many of the younger artists of today who have copied the work of Mathias Kauage. John Siune, who is Kauage's son-in-law is perhaps his most faithful imitator.The picture records the eruption of a volcano at Rabaul. The inscription reads "Long 1994 Volkenu pairap long Rabaul na bagarapim planti samting. Helikopta kisim Praim Minista Se J. Chan igo long Rabaul na lukim ol. Ol dukduk peret na ranawe" which can be translated 'In 1994 a volcano erupted near Rabaul and destroyed the whole surrounding area. The helicopter carries the Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan who goes to look to at everything. The duk-duks (local clansmen) were afraid and ran away.
